Daily Energy Market Update October 20, 2026

Crude oil rallied to fresh multi-month highs as escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East outweighed the prospect of increased Russian oil supply. The rally reflects a growing geopolitical risk premium amid reports of attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and continued threats to commercial shipping in the Gulf. Saudi authorities have not confirmed the reported attacks on energy facilities, and the claims remain independently unverified.

The immediate focus remains on the risk of further disruption to Middle Eastern oil flows. Reports of attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure, alongside continued attacks on vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, have heightened concerns over regional supply security. Although there is no confirmed evidence that these incidents have materially reduced current oil flows, the threat of further disruption continues to underpin prices.

Shipping constraints are adding to the pressure on global crude markets. Tanker freight rates remain near record levels, with a significant number of very large crude carriers reportedly tied up moving oil through the Gulf. Elevated shipping costs are prompting some refiners to consider smaller tankers and alternative sourcing arrangements, reshaping trade flows and supporting premiums for nearby supplies while reducing the competitiveness of longer-distance exports.

The rally comes despite the prospect of easing U.S. restrictions on Russian energy exports, which could bring additional crude and refined products to the market. However, uncertainty over the scope and timing of any policy changes has limited the impact of that potential supply increase. For now, traders appear more focused on the immediate threat to Middle Eastern infrastructure and shipping than on the prospect of additional Russian barrels.

Expectations of a draw in U.S. crude and refined-product inventories are providing further support. A preliminary analyst poll indicated that inventories were expected to have declined last week, although official data are still needed to confirm the trend.

With crude extending its advance to fresh multi-month highs, attention now turns to developments around Saudi energy infrastructure, security in the Strait of Hormuz, and the extent to which elevated freight costs constrain global oil movements. The rally remains supported by geopolitical risk, but its sustainability will depend on whether current threats translate into measurable supply losses. Evidence that oil flows remain resilient could prompt profit-taking, while verified attacks or disruptions to exports could drive prices higher.

Crude (CL1)

Crude rallied to fresh highs overnight, reaching $108.73 before pulling back to $108.09 by 6:36 a.m. The move extended the streak of higher highs to seven consecutive days, marking the third straight session in which prices have traded above the upper Bollinger Band.

Momentum is overbought, but in a strong trend, it can remain elevated for an extended period. In the near term, the first potential sign of a reversal would likely be a close back inside the upper Bollinger Band.

Key Levels

Resistance

  • 109.47 – May high

  • 110.93 – April bearish reversal bar high

  • 117.63 – April reversal bar high following two consecutive closes above the upper Bollinger Band

Support

  • 106.75 – September 15 high

  • 103.97 – Upper Bollinger Band

  • 101.75 – Yesterday’s low

Heating Oil (HOX6)

Heating oil strengthened overnight, although the move was less significant than in crude. Prices broke above last week’s high of 4.9841 but remain below the September 15 high of 5.0499, which marks a double top. Heating oil is also still trading within the Bollinger Bands.

Momentum is overbought but continues to point higher, suggesting the upward trend remains intact despite the potential resistance overhead.

Key Levels

Resistance

  • 5.0274 – Upper Bollinger Band

  • 5.0499 – September 15 high and double top

Support

  • 4.7350 – Monday’s low

  • 4.7162 – 20-day moving average

  • 4.5230 – 50-day moving average

Crude Spread (CLZ26Z27)

The crude spread reached a fresh multi-week high of 19.45 overnight, breaking above Friday’s high of 18.83. Heading into the U.S. open, the spread is trading near the upper Bollinger Band, which stood at 19.16 at 7:10 a.m.

Momentum is overbought and beginning to turn lower, although it has yet to cross down. The spread may struggle to sustain a move above the upper Bollinger Band, with the September 15 high of 23.72 remaining the next major upside target.

A close above the upper Bollinger Band could open the door to a test of the September high. Conversely, a close back inside the bands could trigger a downward momentum crossover and increase pressure for a deeper retracement.

Key Levels

Resistance

  • 19.45 – Overnight high

  • 23.72 – September 15 high

Support

  • 16.38 – Yesterday’s low

  • 14.74 – 20-day moving average

  • 13.88 – 50-day moving average

Natural Gas (NGX6)

Yesterday’s morning rally in natural gas (NG) filled the overnight gap, but the bounce proved short-lived as prices failed to reclaim the key resistance level at the 100-day moving average (3.162). Selling pressure into the close then pushed prices below the 50-day moving average at 3.069.

The failure at the 100-day moving average, followed by the close below the 50-day moving average, reinforces the underlying bearish price structure. The 50-day moving average (3.069) sits below the 100-day moving average (3.162), which in turn remains below the 200-day moving average (3.444), with all three averages trending lower.

Momentum is in neutral territory and pointing lower, leaving the 2.912 low and the 2.900 area as potential near-term downside targets.

Key Levels

Resistance

  • 3.069 – 50-day moving average

  • 3.141 – 20-day moving average

  • 3.162 – 100-day moving average

Support

  • 2.930 – Lower Bollinger Band

  • 2.912 – October 2 bullish reversal bar low

  • 2.900 – Multiple lows
